Rafiki AIDS Orphanage

Nairobi, Kenya

Kenya’s AIDS epidemic has created a need to care for children whose parents have fallen victim to the disease. The Rafiki Orphanage provides food, shelter and education to these children. In 2005, several Central Ohio organizations came together to establish the Rafiki Farm so the orphans can raise crops and livestock to feed themselves.

Early on in the project, it became clear that fresh water was a pressing need. Cap Square Rotary, joined other clubs in the district to make a push to build a well on the farm, and the effort has paid off. Cap Square Rotary plans to continue its efforts to help the Rafiki kids get the best start possible.

Village of El Macote
(Pronounced El Ma-COAT-ay)
Honduras

Cap Square Rotary has been working with this village for several years to provide clean drinking water for the village, plus pilas (washing and rainwater storage basins) and sanitation education.

But the project doesn’t end there. The schoolhouse has two rooms. Because neither has windows, and one even lacks walls, class is disrupted by passing vehicles and weather. Moreover, many families in the village use woodburning stoves which are not properly ventilated, resulting in respiratory illnesses.Cap Square Rotary plans to expand the school and improve ventilation in the homes.
